“…Just as a gardener cultivates his plot, keeping it free from weeds, and growing the flowers and fruits which he requires, so may a man tend the garden of his mind, weeding out all the wrong, useless, and impure thoughts, and cultivating toward perfection the flowers and fruits of right, useful, and pure thoughts. By pursuing this process, a man sooner or later discovers that he is the master-gardener of his soul, the director of his life. He also reveals, within himself, the laws of thought, and understands, with ever-increasing accuracy, how the thought-forces and mind elements operate in the shaping of his character, circumstances, and destiny….”
-James Allen – As a Man Thinketh
What I took away from ‘As a Man Thinketh’ by James Allen is that everything in life starts with a thought. those thoughts are not unlike seeds, they can be planted and harvested when the time comes. So, if you start out with the wrong kinds of thoughts you can never attain what you truly desire.
“…Thoughts of fear, doubt, and indecision crystallize into weak ,unmanly, and irresolute habits, which solidify into circumstances of failure, indigence, and slavish dependence…”
I’m certainly guilty of not controlling my thoughts to the extent that i want. most of us are. after all, we’re human.
Practice quieting your mind. Make it a daily routine, because practice makes perfect. Only think about that which is important and attainable, then take action on those thoughts and ideas to see yourself flourish.
Reading ‘As a man thinketh’ gave me a list of guidelines to follow:
- only think pure thoughts
- if an unpure thought does arise, quiet my mind and remember that i want to reap a good harvest
- controlling your own thoughts is not hard to do, but many people don’t realize that, or the potential that they would have if they practiced it
- you yourself are responsible for your life and your future. not your surroundings, circumstances, or situations
- be accountable for your life and who you are, you only get one chance at this thing called life
- follow your heart
“The vision that you glorify in your mind, the ideal that you enthrone in your heart – this you will build your life by, this you will become.”
